Natural simple sugars from ripe fruit will set your metabolism and FAT BURNING ON FIRE!! And lets not forget the benefits of fruit in optimising heath, balancing hormones, improving energy and reducing bloating. Honestly, why does fruit get such a bad rap?
Watermelon, Pineapple, Cherries, Papaya, natural Orange Juice – restorative, nourishing, Pro-Metabolic, healthy.
Tropical ripe fruit is an integral component of all my Pro-Metabolic Nutrition plans whether it’s my online 12 week thrive and burn meal plan program, the 8 week hormonal balancing or the 6 week super shred
Note, when I refer to fruit sugar, I’m referring to sucrose, the simpler carbohydrate that is found in tropical ripe fruit, beetroot, orange juice, well-cooked root vegetables, maple syrup and raw honey
12 REASONS TO INCLUDE PRO-METABOLIC SIMPLE SUGARS IN YOUR DAILY DIET
1 TO BOOST METABOLISM AND FAT BURNING.
Glucose (the sugar in fruits and juices) is essential for T4 to T3 thyroid hormone conversion. A healthy thyroid will fuel metabolism. The liver provides about 70% of active thyroid hormone, by converting thyroxine to T3, but it can provide this active hormone only when it has adequate glucose.” A Healthy metabolism, faster fat burning.
SO SUGARS ARE A METABOLIC STIMULATOR
Prolonged long carb dieting shuts down thyroid hormone function and downregulates metabolic rate – which in turn slows down fat burning
2 TO PREVENT WEIGHT GAIN AND FAT STORAGE
One of the fabulous ways sugar helps prevent weight gain is that fructose can enter a cell without the assistance of insulin. It is only in the presence of insulin that we are likely to store fat.
Fruits, with their high potassium, magnesium and fructose content, reduces the amount of insulin you have to secrete and actually improves glucose intolerance
“Fructose inhibits the stimulation of insulin by glucose, so this means that eating sucrose (a disaccharide, consisting of glucose and fructose), in place of starch, will reduce the tendency to store fat. Eating “complex carbohydrates,” rather than sugars, is a reasonable way to promote obesity.” – Ray Peat PhD
3 FOR BALANCED HORMONES and to reduce excess estrogen
(quite simply – not enough sugar = hormonal havoc)
“Having a constant flow of glucose is an important part of supporting the glucuronidation pathway, which needs to be in working order to inactivate “used up” estrogen in the liver and brain. The simple sugar boosts the patients glucuronic acid levels enabling them to clear out their “old” hormones.” Dr Datis Kharrazian
When we don’t supply our body with enough natural simple sugars (ie ripe fruits) blood sugar runs low, adrenaline is released and then the body releases cortisol to break down our tissues and muscles (catabolic and degenerative) to make glucose and this process leads to elevation of estrogen.
Estrogen dominance creates glucose intolerance. Estrogen blocks energy production, stimulates the release of destructive free fatty acids, exhausts and reduces the beta cells of the pancreas, and is elevated further by low blood sugar….so one of the best strategies to reduce excess estrogen is to eat your fruit!!
4. no more BLOATING AND good DIGESTION
When fruit is fully ripe the disaccharide (double sugar molecule) sucrose is broken down into fructose and glucose (single sugar molecules) making it really easy to digest. There less digestive issues, less bloating, and less tummy upsets.
5. FOR GREAT ENERGY
When you eat natural sugar, or juice your body will have a beautiful efficient energy source that is immediately available. Carbohydrates are the fuel our body runs on – cut this out and see how quickly you start to fade.
6. TO MINIMISE THE EFFECT OF STRESS HORMONES (CORTISOL)
It is well known now that cortisol is linked to fat storage and disease. Sucrose consumption lowers ACTH, the main pituitary stress hormone. Dr. Peat even goes on to say that sugar can act as a safeguard; increasing your resistance to stress and providing anti-aging benefits when used properly in the context of a nutrient dense diet.
“The protective effects of sugar, and the harmful effects of excessive fat metabolism, are now being widely recognized, in every field of physiology.” Ray Peat, PhD.
7. FOR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND FERTILITY
Did you know that without fructose conception is impossible?
Are you aware that a developing embryo THRIVES on fructose?
“Fructose is the main sugar involved in reproduction, in the seminal fluid and intrauterine fluid, and in the developing fetus. After these crucial stages of life are past, glucose becomes the primary molecular energy source, except when the system is under stress. … The placenta turns glucose from the mother’s blood into fructose, and the fructose in the mother’s blood can pass through into the fetus.” – Ray Peat PhD referencing Jauniaux, et al., 2005
8. TO KEEP YOUR IMMUNE AND HEALTH OPTIMAL
It doesn’t take a science degree to know that natural fruits and pure juices contain higher levels of vitamins and minerals than starches and grains. Fruits are also void of the anti-nutrients found in grains and seeds (phytates, trypsin inhibitors)
Fruits and juices are high in salicylates, which are powerfully anti-inflammatory (exceptions apple and grapefruit) – apples contain pectin which can feed bacteria and grapefruit juice can be estrogenic.
9. TO PREVENT SWEET CRAVINGS
When your body is feed what it needs it doesn’t crave it. We only crave sugar when we deprive our cells of their basic energy source. By consuming fruits and juices you’ll find all your sweet cravings dissipate.
10. ITS BETTER FOR PROTEIN UTILISATION AND MUSCLE GAINS
For all of you who hit the gym and train – Fructose has been found to be far more effective than protein in preventing protein degradation in the muscle. Sugar spares protein and protects muscles and glands.
11. AND TO IMPROVES RECOVERY FROM EXERCISE, MUSCLE DAMAGE AND INFLAMMATION

A quick note:
When I’m referring to sugars I’m not talking about high fructose corn syrup or sugar substitutes, agave or altered fake sugars. This is about pure, natural sugars from fruits, juices, honey, beetroot
Eat your sugars with proteins and fats to help manage blood sugar. Doing this helps to slow the uptake of sugar into your blood stream. This is especially important if you have blood sugar issues. (so fruit and cheese, orange juice and gelatin, fruit and eggs etc)
