I have been in the fitness industry for over 20 years as a professional figure athlete, gym owner, international judge, personal trainer, author, speaker and nutrition coach.  Nothing has been more life changing for both myself and my clients than the principles of a Ray Peat Pro Metabolic diet.

And, I must confess, many years ago when I first read about Dr Ray Peat’s nutritional approach and fat loss ideas, I thought they were rubbish!  And I most certainly did not believe that I could burn fat and get into great shape eating natural sugars, cheese, potatoes, butter, quality chocolate and orange juice etc.

However, I was in such a bad state of metabolic damage from years of gruelling dieting and too much cardio that I had nothing to lose, and out of desperation I decided to give it a try.

LIBERATING

In the first instance, after depriving myself for so long, I found it incredibly liberating to be able to include natural sugars such as fruit, juices and honey into my diet. I also found, to my surprise, that eating natural sugar prevented sugar cravings, which had previously plagued me daily.

BALANCED EATING

I continued with Pro-Metabolic nutrition and found that eating a balanced diet allowed me to enjoy food again. Prior to this I had struggled with a poor relationship with food. Denying myself a balanced diet had led to some very dysfunctional eating habits.  I can tell you out right that restricting food is not the answer.

DR RAY PEAT

 Dr. Peat has a doctorate in biology with a specialisation in physiology and endocrinology. Most of his research and work centres around hormones, metabolism, thyroid and nutrition. He has dedicated his life to studying hormonal balance, metabolism, anti-aging, and inflammation.

As an endocrinologist his work is based around hormones and how to use nutrition and lifestyle factors to balance them.

WHAT HAS THIS GOT TO DO WITH FAT BURNING AND HEALTH?

Everything… The pituitary gland produces thyroid hormone and is responsible for the rate your cells respire (metabolism). The core of this approach, very simply, is that by increasing cellular respiration, it will increase metabolic rate which will increase fat burning and overall health.

The take-home is that by eating a unique combination of nutrients that will upregulate thyroid hormone conversion it will also increase metabolism, which will lead to a healthier, balanced body that loses weight effortlessly. Win win

WHY ITS NECESSARY TO BALANCE HORMONES FOR EFFICIENT FAT BURNING

 Our entire body is connected and to lose fat efficiently we need all connected systems to be functioning optimally.   Fast fat burning requires fast thyroid hormone conversion,  to upregulate thyroid hormone conversion we need to decrease inflammation, balance estrogen and progesterone, keep insulin balanced, and reduce excess cortisol.  When metabolic rate is increased, fat burning is increased.

BACK TO  MY INITIAL THOUGHTS ON DR RAY PEATS PRO-METABOLIC DIET FOR FAT LOSS 

So while this research and theory sounded good on paper, actually changing my entire “fitness industry nutritional mould” to a ‘Peatarian’ style of eating was a huge challenge for me. It opposed so much of what the fitness industry had led me to believe was true. (Low carbs, fasted cardio, work harder, rest less, eat less). I was about to embark on my biggest competition year yet with three international shows (a world championship and a Universe PRO show) and I needed to cut fat to be in outstanding condition.

You see, as the years passed and I entered my 30’s and then 40’s I was finding it harder and harder to burn fat, often having to resort to depressing and boring low carb and low calorie diets with a ridiculous amount of cardio.   So this time I was desperate not to repeat my previous exhausting, depleting, debilitating, unhealthy, time-consuming dieting phases of my previous competition preps.  I did not think my relationship, my business, my children, my happiness, my hormones or my health would survive another cycle of hard-core dieting.  So I had to find another way.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I CHANGED TO A PRO-METABOLIC DIET?

Well… as it turned out, the results I achieved were even greater than I had ever imagined possible. Instead of cutting calories in order to get leaner, I was eating delicious Pro-Thyroid food, nourishing my body, so my metabolism increased and I found I had to actually ADD calories (and kept getting leaner) – Yup you read that right.

For the first time in 13 years, I dieted for a competition by eating MORE food each week AND I did this with zero cardio – not even five minutes of cardio. I would not have believed it myself if I had not experienced it. I was eating 800-1000 calories a day MORE than I ever have eaten when dieting before….remember as a professional body athlete most of my life I have been in dieting cycles.

And… I felt amazing, full of energy, I was happier, I was enjoying delicious food and right up until comp day I was eating honey, fruit, cheese, potatoes and butter. Consequently, as I wasn’t depleted and as I had more carbs, I trained with more intensity and I put on more muscle and looked the best I ever looked, was the healthiest I had ever been, and felt the greatest I had ever felt.   Win win win win win!

The season I dieted with Pro-Metabolic Nutrition, I had my best season ever, winning overall figure championships, placing 3rd at a NABBA world championships and winning a WFF Universe PRO show.

ADOPTING THE RIGHT NUTRITIONAL APPROACH CHANGED EVERYTHING.

Not only does the right nutrition determine what I look like, but is crucial to my health, hormones, energy, longevity, digestion, mood and happiness.

MY EXACT DR RAY PEAT INSPIRED PRO-METABOLIC DIET PLAN I USED TO BURN FAT (AND WIN A FIGURE PRO SHOW)

This is what I ate:

  •  Sour dough toast, eggs, mushrooms & pulp-free orange juice.
    • Grated carrot, coconut oil, raisins, vinegar and salt and ripe tropical fruit.
    • Prawns, coconut oil, white rice and chocolate milk.
    • Hard European cheese and ripe tropical fruit.
    • Grass fed beef, white potatoes, butter, zucchini cooked in coconut oil and gelatin in orange juice.
    • Pot set Greek yoghurt, gelatin, with stewed fruit and raw honey.

THEN WHEN I NEEDED TO DROP MORE BODY FAT…

When my body fat needed to really drop during the last few weeks coming into the show, I simply reduced the rice and potato starches and increased the tropical fruit and simple sugars to fuel my metabolic rate.  This change saw me burn even more fat and still gaining muscle!!!

MORE GOOD NEWS

The good news doesn’t finish there.   Offseason, for the first time in 13 years, I didn’t experience rebound weight gain, cravings or have to do cardio to maintain my weight.
